For most people this is just a temporary side effect, which just makes your teeth more sensitive to hot and cold. This is due to the whitening chemical. Some people believe the sensitive is more pronounced with home tooth whitening kits, but this hasn’t been proven. Personally I haven’t noticed a difference.

Usually the tooth sensitivity isn’t very painful. On a scale from (more…)

Tooth Whitening Strips

Friday, January 26th, 2007

One of the cheaper options of tooth whitening that many people try are the teeth whitening strips.

So what exactly are they? Well, a tooth whitening strip is basically a thin piece of polyethylene which has a film of hydrogen peroxide on it. As you may already know, this peroxide is a whitening agent that’s used in many tooth whitening treatments.

Brighter, Whiter Smile

Friday, January 26th, 2007

If you are looking for that brighter, whiter smile then tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the color of your teeth. Tooth whitening is a highly effective way of combating stains created from smoking, eating and certain drinks such as coffee, tea and red juice.

Some people naturally have whiter teeth than others but as we get older, like our bodies tend to head south so do our teeth become more discolored and stained. It’s not only what we eat, drink and smoke that affects our teeth but teeth can also become discolored from tarter and other things such things as tiny cracks in our teeth which increase susceptibility to staining.

If you approach your dentist about tooth whitening they will more than likely suggest the use professional bleaching as a form of whitening your teeth. Bleaching is not a quick fix but it is one of the least expensive options with the whole process taking about 3 – 4 weeks. Firstly, your dentist will have to make a mouth guard to protect your mouth from the effect of the bleach and once the mouth guard is ready your dentist will start the tooth whitening treatment. After the initial treatment you will have to apply the bleach yourself over a two to four weeks for periods of half an hour to an hour at a time although some products can be left on longer to achieve a faster result. Tooth Bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure whereby the cosmetic dentist applies a mouldable bonding material (that has been color matched) to the surface of your tooth in order to re-shape or hide any imperfections in your tooth.

Apart from the reshaping of teeth tooth bonding is sometimes used as a viable alternative to teeth whitening for those patients who are deemed unsuitable for bleaching such as pregnant mothers, people with dental crowns or veneers or those who have damage to their tooth enamel.

Tooth bonding is also used for repairing chips (more…)

Paint on Tooth Whitening Products

Friday, January 26th, 2007

For those that don’t fancy the cost or the hassle of tray based tooth whitening products or professional tooth whitening, paint on tooth whiteners, while not necessarily proving to be as effect as some of their counterparts, certainly have a place in the tooth whitening market.

Paint on tooth whitening products are unique in as much that they don’t require tooth whitening trays and, as the name suggests, paint on tooth whiteners are applied directly to the teeth where the product solidifies and transforms into an adherent film.

Unlike other tooth whitening systems, with paint on tooth whitening products you can be selective as to which teeth you choose to bleach.

Colgate’s Simply white (paint on tooth whitener) uses the preferred carbamide peroxide as it’s bleaching agent rather than the traditional hydrogen peroxide which is commonly found in over the counter tooth whitening products. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent not really supported by cosmetic dentists or the dental association as it is their belief that it can’t safely be used in sufficient quantities to deliver the desired whitening effect. What to Do after a Tooth Extraction?

Friday, January 26th, 2007

After an extraction, it’s important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. That’s why your dentist will ask you to bite on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after an extraction. If bleeding or oozing continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another gauze pad on the area and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times.

After the blood clot forms, it’s important to protect it, especially for the next 24 hours. It’s important to not:

• smoke and chew tobacco

• drinking alcohol

• suck through a straw

• rinse your mouth vigorously

• clean the teeth next to the extraction site

These activities could dislodge the clot and slow down healing.

Limit yourself to calm activities for the first 24 hours. This keeps your blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding, and helps the healing process.

After the tooth is extracted, you may feel some pain and have (more…)
